Timberapex - What Changes When You Build a Sauna Outdoors

An indoor sauna sits inside a house that already manages water, warmth and airflow. Once the room moves outside, all three of those jobs land on the building itself, and that is where most DIY outdoor saunas fall apart within a couple of years. We build them as proper small structures, not as a shed with a heater in it. The biggest change is the moisture path. An outdoor sauna needs a floor that drains, a shell that keeps rain out and a lining cavity that lets the cedar dry between sessions. If the wall cannot breathe, the back of the boards will grow mould no matter how good the timber is. We use a ventilated batten cavity, a waterproofed wet area and a floor waste, and we check the fall on the slab before anything else goes up. Insulation and heater sizing come next. An outdoor build loses heat much faster than an internal room, especially through the floor and the ceiling, so the heater usually needs to be one size larger than the square metre figure suggests. Wood fired units suit a standalone bathhouse beautifully, but they need a flue, clearance from the wall and a spot with good air movement around it. Electric heaters are simpler and easier to automate. The cladding is the last thing people think about, and it decides how the building looks in ten years. Charred timber, oiled cedar, stained hardwood battens and shadowline boards all work, but each one wants a different maintenance rhythm. A full outdoor bathhouse with a hot room, a cool down shower and a covered verandah usually lands somewhere between ninety thousand and one hundred and fifty thousand dollars depending on size and finishes. Worth getting right the first time.
